ABOUT STEVE & cv
My name is Steve Peterson. I'm 38 years old and have been a doctor for 13 years, husband for 12, father for 10 and quadriplegic for 6. My personal and professional experiences have shaped my contributions to council since I was elected in December 2021.
I have lived in Orange since 2014. It is my wife’s hometown and when we had our first child we wanted to move close to family. We now have two boys aged 10 and 8 and live on a cattle farm on the outskirts of town.
I am a doctor and work in a couple of telehealth roles providing clinical support for small emergency departments in regional New South Wales. I am also the doctor at the local drug and alcohol detox and rehab. I am on the board of Live Better, a regionally focused disability service provider, and have education roles with the GP College and Sydney University.
I have a history of community service with 5 years as a scout leader, 3 years on the local St Vinnies night van, the volunteer gameday doctor with 3 different sporting teams, and roles with various University, social and Church groups. In March 2018 I was hit by a car whilst riding my bicycle to work at the Orange emergency department and became quadriplegic. This has changed the community service I'm capable of. Since then, I have been involved in fundraising with the local mountain bike club and for spinal injury research. Additionally I am on the board of Spinal Cord Injuries Australia, the clinical governance committee of Wangarang, am a buddy at a church group for adults with intellectual disabilities, and I am also a volunteer with the aged care visitors scheme. I am a Christian and that faith definitely affects how I see the world and what I prioritise.
There are 12 councillors and I pull my weight by chairing 4 of the 26 community committees, by submitting 22 of the 90 notices of motions debated this term, and have never missed a meeting.
